Law … , 1792With 4 engraved plates (including frontispieces), pp xxiii, 288, 281(bis) - 284 : xii, 368 : xii, 324, with half-titles, 3 vols, large 12mo, contemporary calf, gilt spines, red and black labels, gilt : little rubbed at corners but bindings sound and strong, otherwise very good to nice.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: PEARSALL (richard ). Contemplations on the Ocean, Harvest, Sickness, and the Last Judgment. In a series of letters to a friend. The second edition, corrected. Printed for J. Buckland … and E. Dilly … , 1755. With 2 engraved plates by and after J. S. Müller, pp xi, (1, adverts), 220, 8vo, contemporary calf, gilt, neatly rebacked : some very light browning and fingering but still very good. Pearsal (1698-1762), a Somerset dissenting minister, who, in writing his ‘Contemp-lations’, a mixture of theology, philosophy and religion, was encouraged by Hervey to imitate his very successful ‘Meditations’. ESTC calls for one plate only. The Nuremberg engraver, Johann Sebastian Müller, settled in England in 1744, changing his name to Miller, became a leading book illustrator, engraving the plates for 'Ruins of Palmyra' and 'Ruins of Paestum' and also engraved designs for Chippendale.
