FDR Signed ''Gabriel'' Screenplay
Very unique and interesting FDR signed item. Screenplay bound as a book of ''Gabriel Over the White House: A Novel of the Presidency,'' signed ''Franklin D. Roosevelt'' on the half-title page. Likely signed by FDR as President as the movie was filmed during the 1932 Presidential campaign and released in 1933. The movie, controversial at its time, portrayed a President who cared little about his country's deep financial problems until a religious near-death experience transformed him into a capable and activist, albeit totalitarian ruler. President Roosevelt apparently saw the film numerous times and enjoyed it, stating that he thought the film ''would help the country.'' His signature to this screenplay lends credence to his approval of ''Gabriel,'' which ironically supports the opinions of both Roosevelt's New Deal fans and his harshest detractors who saw Roosevelt's activism as anti-Constitutional. From the estate of the screenwriter, Carey Wilson, who also wrote ''Ben-Hur'' and ''Mutiny Over the Bounty.'' 282-page manuscript bound in black and red leather boards measuring 8.5'' x 11''. Several passages circled in pencil, presumably by Carey himself. Scuffing to backstrip, overall in very good condition.
