FATIMID: al-'Aziz, 975-996, AV dinar (4.23g), [Sabta] (Ceuta), AH384, A-703, Nicol—, unusual arrangement of the legends on both sides, as Nicol type A1a, recorded only for the mint of Sabta dated AH386 (Nicol-563), EF, RRRR. Although there is no mint name on this piece, the distinctive calligraphy and arrangement of the legends has been recorded only for Sabta. The only recorded Sabta dinar of al-'Aziz is dated AH386, illustrated on our fixed price list #143 (January 1998), Lot 19, which sold for $4000, plus a second one, also sold by us around the same time, but no record or image retained. Since Sabta (Ceuta) remains part of Spain, even though it is on the African side of the Mediterranean, this type can be regarded as the only Fatimid coinage ever struck in Spain!
