(FATHERS OF THE SOVIET ATOMIC BOMB PROGRAM)
An important and rare collection of five documents signed by leaders of the Soviet atomic bomb program, with some reference to the securing of funds and equipment from a defeated Germany. Included are: PYOTR L. KAPITSA (1894-1984), Nobel-winning physicist who was dismissed for his refusal to work on an atomic bomb, later reinstated and developed the means to liquefy helium. A.E.S. ""I agree with the list. Kapitsa"" at the bottom of a T.L.S. 1p. large 4to., [n.p.], Sept. 18, 1967 concerning the development of a treaty with East Germany allowing mutual research and discussion of common problems, also signed by scientist ARTSIMOVICH; S. VAVILOV, Chairman of the Academy of Science, T.L.S. on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Moscow, July 1, 1946 asking that four cars be ""appropriated"" from East Germany; LEV D. LANDAU (1908-1968), Nobel-winning Physicist who pioneered in low temperature physics, atomic and nuclear physics and solid state and plasma physics, D.S. 1p. large 4to., [n.p., n.d.], his signed agreement to a daily agenda concerning work of the fourth USSR meeting concerning low-temperature physics, with signatures of five other unidentified scientists; E. PATON, Head of the Ukrainian Academy of Science, T.L.S. 2pp. 4to. on official letterhead, Kiev, 1947 seeking to secure raw materials from Germany and complaining of the lack of deliveries; and a T.L.S. 1p. 4to., official letterhead, 1944 seeking material from the newly-conquered areas of Germany. Following World War II the German academic community was picked clean by the Allies, with both Russian and Western scientific communities adding to their numbers. An excellent grouping of some of Russia's most important post-war scientists. Overall very good condition. 1360
