<td width="100%">
Original statue by famous 19th century French artist, Charles Levy (died 1899). Depicts handsome working man, possibly a miner or a harvester, taking a break. Name of the work is FANEUR. 9 1/2inches high. Stands on naturalistic rock formed base with sheaths of wheat lying behind the young man. There are a number of hand-impressed marks on the base, including the artist's name (twice), and others that I believe are the foundry/maker's marks. PAN EUR PAR CH. LEVY and SALON DES BEAUX ARTS. The barefoot worker is dressed only in a pair of trousers rolled up to the knees and a sash around his waist from which a water bottle and handkerchief hang at the back. Marvellous physique - thin with clearly defined muscles and strongly chiselled face under a small hat. Fabulous fine detail such as the tendons in the neck, crease of the clothes that show the muscular thighs clearly underneath and beautiful fingers and back. Once held an instrument in his hands - now missing.
