DIAMOND TRAP PUMP SHOTGUN.
Cal. 12 Ga. S# 461336E. Captain John R. Hughes had an illustrious career w/ the Texas Rangers from 1887 until his retirement in 1915. Captain Hughes, who often worked alone, had a reputation for always getting his man dead or alive & faced some of the most dangerous outlaws in Texas at the time. Captain Hughes was born on Feb 11th, 1855 near Cambridge, Illinois. Consignor supplied information states that Hughes was the inspiration for Zane Grey’s “The Lone Ranger”. Bbl. Shortened 28” w/ Cyl. bore. Hand matted top that extends over receiver. Breech block is marked “TRAP GUN”. Left side of receiver is engraved “Capt. John R, Hughes/Texas Ranger”. Small round grooved forearm & straight grip stock of XXX fancy walnut w/ trap grade checkering having black diamonds on both sides of wrist. LOP is shortened 13 1/4” over an aftermarket London style pad. Mfg. 1910. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: included w/ this historic shotgun is a packet of information containing the October 1927 edition of the Frontier Times featuring an article about Captain Hughes’s career & exploits along w/ photocopies of a later Frontier Times article w/ his obituary. CONDITION: metal finish has faded to gray showing general light pitting. Left side of bbl. has raised dent 9” inches from the muzzle. Sanded & refinished wood have worn appearance w/ thinned checkering showing numerous scratches, marks & dents. Stock has added wood repair left of trigger guard w/ band of dark composite repair at top of receiver. Bore shows scattered pitting. PROVENANCE: purchased from descendants of John R. Hughes by Clayton Grant, special forces retired, in 1977. Sold to Todd Gurganus of Goldsboro, NC. Later sold to John Hayes of Gettysburg, in 1992. (22-6183/DS). CURIO. $15,000-20,000.
