Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga, Spain, son of an artist, Jose Ruiz, and Maria Picasso. Rather than adopt the common name Ruiz, the young Picasso took the rarer name of his mother. Picasso was an artistic prodigy by the age of 15. Picasso was technically skilled in drawing and painting at an early age, and by late 1906 had begun painting in a revolutionary manner. Inspired by Paul Cézanne. Picasso began to express space and form in bold geometric terms. This sculptural sense of space formed the beginnings of Cubism, and in 1907 he painted the historic Les demoiselles d'Avignon, considered one of the first true forms of pure Modern art.Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and ceramicist who worked in France, a leader of the School of Paris, he was outstanding for his technical virtuosity, unbelievable originality, and prolificacy.Picasso's talent and reputation were decisively established by the time he was 30. He became financially successful, his reputation soared and during his 70 year career. By the late 1930's he was the most famous artist in the world. As a native of Spain, he was commissioned to create a mural by the Spanish Government. He depicted the brutality of Fascism and the Spanish Civil War with the epic and politically charged Guernica. He was bold and had a fascinating amicable persona, which was evident in his renowned relationships with women. His life and legacy continues in museums and collections throughout the world. His enormous body of work spans so many years that art experts tend to separate his career into distinct phases, such as the Blue Period, the Rose Period and his most famous contribution to modern art, Cubism. Picasso, unlike so many before him, was an international celebrity as well as an important contributor to the world of art. The Blue Period of Picasso lasted from about 1900 to 1904. It is characterized by the use of different shades of blue underlining the melancholic style of his subjects - people from the grim side of life with thin, half-starved bodies. His painting style during these years is masterly and convinces even those who reject his later modern style.During Picasso's Rose Period from about 1905 to 1906, his style moved away from the Blue Period to a friendly pink tone with subjects taken from the world of the circus. He changed art profoundly in the 20th century. Picasso died on April 8, 1973 at his home, Notre-Dame-de-Vie in Mougin, France at the age of 91. He was buried on April 10 at his castle Vauvenagues. Picasso 's works are highly sought after by museums and art collectors worldwide. Picasso is widely considered as one of the undisputed greatest artists of the 20th century.
