FABULOUS GILT DECORATED ITALIAN SHIELD IN THE STYLE OF THE NEGROLI WORKSHOP, MILAN.
This wonderful work of art, relief embossed parade shield is an opportunity to acquire a shield which, if it were from the Negroli Workshop, would cost six figures. Entire shield is repoussed/embossed with a battle scene featuring warriors on horseback and in foot combat carrying shields, spears and wearing Romanesque helmets. Shield has central spike damascened in gold. All details of warriors, armor and horses detailed in gold damascene as well. Roped rim is folded properly. Inside of shield shows great age with the deteriorated leather, velvet grips and flax cords. Construction throughout is in the style of 16th century examples which may be found in the Metropolitan Museum, the Wallace Collection in London and great museums throughout the world. This is a beautiful work of art and as there are no similar period shields available, this lovely piece will have to serve the collector of high art armor. PROVENANCE: Joe Kindig, Jr., York, Pennsylvania. CONDITION: Excellent for type. Metal is deep even age brown. Some loss to gold decoration. 4-49161 MRZ72
