Jazz Age novelist and short story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. Fitzgerald was the self-styled spokesman of the “Lost Generation,” Americans born in the 1890s who came of age during World War I. He finished four novels, left a fifth unfinished, and wrote dozens of short stories that feature themes of youth, despair, and age. TLS signed “Scott Fitzgerald,” one page, 8.5 x 11, November 16, 1939. Brief letter to Isabel Horton, sister of actor Edward Everett Horton. In full: “Here’s the rest of the rent due from October 19th to November 19th. Sorry it’s been such a mess.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one between first and last name of signature, scattered creases, and some mild toning. Fitzgerald rented a cottage from the Hortons in Encino, California, while trying to make money screenwriting, although he found it degrading.
