This is an amazing Eskimo Yup’ik Loon Nunivak Mask / Spirit Wheel made of walrus tusk, whalebone and baleen by Aleut Eskimo Cup’ik Cevak, Alaska artist, Franklin Matchian from circa 2003. The piece comes with the memo denoting it was purchased for $1,200.00 by Dan and Bonnie Paynich of Great Falls, Montana from the artist Franklin Matchian, referred to as an I.V.O.R.Y. Loon Mask sold on September 25, 2003. The spirit mask is made of carved walrus tusk, baleen rings, whale sinew ties with a carved fish in the loon’s bill made of fossilized / petrified mammoth tusk, with the baleen ring representing the Universe or Sea and the loon at the center representing the Inua or Spirit. The carved tusk figures are as such; Hunter at top, King Salmon, Traditional hand design, wings, feet, diving seal, tail of loon. Franklin Matchian was born 1966 in Cevak, Alaska and later moved to Anchorage, Alaska. He is of Native American decent, with some of his pieces being marked as Eskimo. He operates Cikumi - "On the Ice" Eskimo Arts by Franklin Matchian a gallery. The piece is truly incredible showing a large size with immense detail by a noted Eskimo artist who used only the finest materials. The piece of paper with noted information is stored on the back of the custom curved glass or bowed glass oval frame. Frame measures 20” by 17” by 3”. Total weight of 8 lbs. 10 oz.
