F.E. Wolperding „Bonfire at Schwetine”, around 1850
This nice oil painting by the German landscape painter Friedrich Ernst Wolperding was painted around 1850. It depicts a scene of a bonfire in a forest at dusk. The sky is blue but drenched in pink tones of the setting sun. The overall color palette of the painting is dominated by the dark green and brown tones of the trees. In the midst of the trees in the lower left part of the canvas a small group of people gathers around a bonfire. The people are scarcely lit by the fire; the main focus is given to the depiction of the trees. Wolperding with this painting shows how great he was in portraying the force of nature, which becomes apparent to the viewer.

The painting shows signs of age; there are extensive paint losses due to the framing, which also destroyed part of the signature. The painting shows craquelure over the entire surface. It has once been restored, so that remains of a varnish are visible. The overall dimensions, framed are 53 x 67 cm and the dimensions of the canvas are 43 x 58 cm. The painting is signed lower left with “Ernst Wolperding Kiel 18…”. There is a label at the back, giving the artist’s biography and the painting’s title.
