(Walt Disney Studios, 1959) Original concept storyboard painting featuring Prince Phillip holding the ‘sword of truth’ as he approaches the fire-breathing Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, done by Eyvind Earle, tempera on artist’s board, 19.75 x 9.25. Dramatic piece shows Phillip on his rearing horse as the large dragon approaches with flames coming out its mouth. Signed in the lower right in light blue paint by Earle. This piece is also cloth-matted and framed to an overall size of 27 x 16.5. In fine condition. The third ‘princess’ film produced by the studio, Disney looked to set it apart from its predecessors by its unique art design. Earle’s hands-on influence in the film cannot be overstated, as he painted all the backgrounds and set the film’s color design. His talents are most evident in this design from the film’s conclusion, one of the studio’s most ambitious sequences ever designed.
