Extremely rare model 1808 North single shot US Naval issue pistol serial number “7” with long point-shaped lockplate, early markings, and bag-shaped grip. Believed to be a pattern pistol submitted to the Navy for their approval of this contract. The pistol is in .64 caliber with 10” barrel, 16-1/8” overall. Two letters from noted collector Ed Bidder to Charles DuPont concerning this particular pistol are included where Mr. Bidder states his belief that this very rare bag-shaped pistol was a pattern gun. He also states that the pistol is an original flintlock, however under extensive forensic examination of the interior, we have determined it to be an excellent, near imperceptible, reconversion from percussion to flint, possibly using an original hammer and frizzen. The metal surfaces are in good condition showing scattered light to moderate erosion and surface pitting, some heavier pitting on the breach and muzzle. The lock is well marked with early forward placement of “U States” and “North” marking behind the hammer. The stock is in good to very good condition with a few dings, mars, small losses, and slight openings around pinholes, but at least very good overall. The stock shows a large “V” stamp at the apex of the ridge behind the sideplate. The pistol shows an original-style belt hook and metal-tipped hickory ramrod. The stock is set back slightly from the muzzle at the forend, which may have been period done from a chip or just a very early feature. Noted expert Ed Bidder estimated 12 of this model to be patterns with the bag-shaped grip and only a very few extant. Est: $7,000 - $14,000
