This is an extremely rare example of a desirable Paterson No. 3 Belt Model Revolver. Samuel Colt manufactured approximately 450 No. 3 Belt Revolvers between 1837 and 1840. The No. 3 Belt Revolvers were serial numbered with the No. 2 Revolvers and account for about one-half of the production of the two types. The top barrel flat is marked: "-Patent Arms M'g Co Paterson N-J Colt's Pt.-" reading from breech to muzzle with arrows at either end of the legend. The cylinder has traces of the original roll-engraved Centaur scene. The matching serial number, "593", is marked on the interior of backstrap, back of cylinder, back of barrel, inside front of hammer, cylinder rotation collar, and on the inside of the trigger. All blue finish, brass blade front and hammer notch rear sights and fitted with smooth walnut grips with the distinctive flared butt.
BBL: 4 3/4 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 34 Percussion
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 593
Condition: Very good plus. The revolver has an attractive crisp even gray-brown patina overall. The barrel has some scattered surface texturing and the flat edges are slightly rounded. There is some scattered pitting on the cylinder as well as flash pitting on the rear face and percussion nipples, and on the hammer sides. There is a small amount of minor pitting on the frame. The grips are very good with strong traces of the original varnish finish and showing a few minor dents and handling marks. The action is good. This is a very good example of a scarce and historic Colt Belt Model Paterson No. 3 Revolver.
