Extremely Rare U.S. Army First Contract Colt Model 1900 Automatic Pistol Serial Number 93 with Holst
A rare example of one of the Colt Model 1900 Automatic Pistols that were purchased by the U.S. Army. This pistol was shipped from Colt to Springfield Armory on May 16, 1900. The pistols were subsequently issued to U.S. Cavalry and Infantry units stationed in the Philippines, Cuba and Puerto Rico for testing in the field. Each pistol was issued with a holster and 200 cartridges. The pistol has the high polish Colt commercial blue finish on the slide, frame and barrel. The hammer is casehardened and small parts have a niter blue finish. The seven-round magazine has the original nickel-plated finish. The stocks are highly figured walnut with brass screw escutcheons and niter blued screws. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the serial number "93" above the trigger guard and has "U.S." boldly stamped on the trigger guard bow. The left stock is stamped with the date of acceptance "1900" script "JTT" initials of the Ordnance final inspector (Captain John T. Thompson) surrounded by a rectangle with rounded corners. The right side of the slide is roll-stamped: "AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 38 RIMLESS SMOKELESS" in two lines. A Colt "K" inspection or assembler's mark is stamped on the right trigger guard bow. The left side of the slide is stamped: "BROWNING'S PATENT"/PAT'D APRIL 20, 1897" in two lines followed by "COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS M.F.G. CO./HARTFORD. CONN. U.S.A." with the encircled Rampant Colt trademark located behind the slide serrations. The bottom of the magazine floor plate is roll-stamped: "PAT'D SEPT.9.1884". The original sight safety was changed by Colt and replaced with a fixed, conventional, rear sight. The pistol is accompanied by a black leather holster originally issued with U.S. Army Colt Model 1900 and Model 1902 Automatic Pistols. The bridle leather holster has "US" embossed in an oval on the flap and "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/E.H.S" stamped on the belt loop. Rock Island Arsenal manufactured a total of 326 holsters for Army Colt 1900 and 1902 trials pistols between 1900 and 1903.

Very fine. The pistol retains approximately 70% of the original high polish blue finish. Most of the blue is present on the right side of the slide and frame. The top and left side of the slide have moderate flaking and scattered surface rust. The grip straps have a deep brown patina. The hammer retains 90% or more of the original casehardened finish. The trigger and other small parts retain generous amounts of the original niter blue finish. The marking on the pistol side and frame are sharp. The magazine has 90% or more of the original nickel-plated finish. The highly figured walnut stocks are in very good condition with moderate handling wear. The Ordnance inspection marks on the left stock remain sharp. The holster is in fine condition; the holster body has a smooth finish with tight stitching. The finish on the holster flap and top of the belt loop has light cracking and some scattered flaking. The embossed "U.S." marking on the holster is strong and the Rock Island Arsenal markings on the belt loop are crisp. This is an extremely rare example of the first automatic pistol tested by the U.S. Army with an equally rare holster. One may not have an opportunity to purchase one of these again.
