Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 70
Manufactured in 1946 during the transition period (late 1945-1951), this pre-64 Model 70 carbine is the only known carbine factory chambered in 7.92 mm. This caliber is not listed in Dean Whitaker's study "THE MODEL WINCHESTER 1937-1964". The Model 70 was a very popular rifle with many custom variations having been manufactured. Whitaker notes that "the versatility of the rifle gave rise to many factory -sponsored or factory-sanctioned experimental chamberings and configurations." Factory records are, as Whitaker states, "rather scanty or, in some cases, non-existent." Even today there could still be undocumented variations of the Model 70. The 20 inch barrel features a hooded ramp front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, and standard Winchester markings on the left side followed by "7.92 M/M". The Winchester factory proof is stamped on the breech end of the barrel and receiver on the left side. The receiver has the two line Winchester trade mark and is tapped for scope/sight mounting. It has a polished bolt numbered to the gun, cloverleaf tang and pre-war safety. Note that the pre-war safety was used until sometime shortly after WWII and, therefore, it would not be uncommon for a 1946 manufactured carbine to have a pre-war safety. The checkered pistol grip stock has a straight comb, sling swivels and checkered steel buttplate.
