Extremely Rare Gold Andrew Johnson US Mint Medal Extremely Rare Gold Andrew Johnson U.S. Mint Medal
Extremely Rare Gold Andrew Johnson U.S. Mint Medal muled with the obverse of the 1833 Andrew Jackson Inaugural Medal. 18mm. Gold. Obverse unsigned while William Barber signs the reverse. The obverse bears a bust of Andrew Jackson to the left in a plain field, while the reverse bears a bust of Andrew Johnson to the right in a plain field. An ornate "B" initial is inscribed on the truncation of the bust. The obverse portrait of Jackson is the same as used on PR-33, the Jackson Inaugural medalet. The Andrew Johnson bust does not appear in Julian. However, DeWitt/ Sullivan lists (AJOHN 1866-6) an 18mm white metal token bearing this same Johnson die; combined with another reverse. The note following the description states that the token was "struck at the U.S. Mint." Condition is brilliant proof, with minor very light rubbing in the fields. A trivial carbon speck is on the rim on the Jackson side at 7:00. The first known example of this medalet sold at a major auction house in 1995 for $1155. Don't risk waiting another ten years for a chance to add this great rarity, which escaped the notice of collectors for over 125 years, to your collection.
