Extremely Rare DWM Model 1900 Swiss Luger Pistol with Unique E Letter Prefix Serial Number

Estimate: $25000 - 50000
This is a beautiful example of a very early 1900 Swiss military contract Luger with the ultra rare "E" prefix serial number, that remains in original unaltered condition. These early "E" prefix serial numbers pistols are discussed on page 27 of the book "The Swiss Variations" by Fred Datig and in there he indicated that a few pistols in the "E588 to E735" serial number range have been reported mostly in Switzerland with a handful in the U.S.. There is no indication or whereabouts of any pistol produced with serial numbers from "E1 to E587". Additionally he indicated that all of the known examples were over stamped/restamped in Switzerland with a new letter "A" suffix serial number. As noted on the list in his book, based on Swiss records, this specific Swiss Luger (E720) was supposed to have also been renumbered to "5020A", however in examining this pistol it is apparent that it has not been altered in any way. Consequently making this an extremely rare example. This pistol retains it's original 7.65 mm caliber chambering with the 4 7/8 inch rapid taper barrel, old style long frame with the flat mainspring and no stock lug, early dished toggles with the toggle lock, recessed, flat breechblock, and grip safety. This pistol also still retains the original narrow trigger. The top of the chamber area has the "Swiss Cross" in sunburst crest with the DWM scroll monogram on the front toggle link. The left side of the barrel extension is stamped with the small Swiss Cross and Cross over "V" control or firing proof of Herr Vogelsang the Swiss inspector at the DWM factory, a small Swiss cross firing proof and a larger "P" stamp indicating it was released from the military. The full serial number, "E720" is stamped on the underside of the barrel, with the last two or three digits of the serial number stamped on all the various small parts. It is complete with one original swiss pattern, nickel plated magazine with the unnumbered wooden Swiss base.
