Note: Opium War (1839-1842) and Second Opium War (1856-1860) were primarily conflicts between China and Western powers. Opium from British-controlled India was in high demand in China during that time. Large quantities of opium were smuggled into China by British traders, primarily from the British East India Company.

The second Opium War involved Indian troops in the military campaign against China. The British captured and occupied various parts of China, including Hong Kong. The Treaty of Nanking ended the First Opium War by ceding Hong Kong to the British. Through the Convention of Peking in 1860, the British further expanded their control over Hong Kong during the Second Opium War.
