Extraordinary World War I U.S. Army Contract Remington-UMC Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is an excellent original example of the scarce Remington-UMC WWI U.S. Army Model 1911 contract pistol. These scarce pistols were manufactured by the Remington Arms, U.M.C. Co., of Bridgeport, Connecticut in late 1918/early 1919 in their own block of numbers "1 to 21,676". Most of these pistols were disposed of after WWI because they did not conform to the Government's interchangeability requirements with the Colt Model 1911 pistol. The left side of the slide has the three line, two blocks markings consisting of "PATENTED DEC.19.1905/FEB.14.1911.AUG.19.1913./COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO." followed by "MANUFACTURED BY/REMINGTON ARMS UMC CO. INC./BRIDGEPORT. CONN.U.S.A." in the second block with the circled, "REMINGTON/UMC" logo between the two blocks. The right side of the slide has the two-line markings "MODEL OF 1911/U.S. ARMY CALIBER .45". The left side of the frame extension is stamped with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" with the final U.S. Government inspector's initials "E.E.C./Eagle Head/E28" Ordnance inspection mark above the magazine release button. The serial number "NO 7744" is stamped on the right side of the frame above the trigger. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the top of the barrel chamber, an "E" provisional inspection mark is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard bow, on the rear of the slide above the firing pin stop and on the bottom of the mainspring housing. The pistol is complete with one all blued, flat base magazine and a reproduction cardboard box.

Manufucture: Remington UMC
Model: M1911
BBL: 5 inch round
Stock:
Guage: 45 ACP
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 7744

Excellent with 95% of the correct original blue finish overall with the balance of the finish; found mostly on the front grip strap and mainspring housing having turned a brown patina with minor finish loss on the trigger guard bow. The rest of the gun really shows high condition blue finish overall. The walnut grips are in very fine plus condition with nice original sharp checkering overall showing no handling marks. This is a really high condition and very difficult to obtain, Remington-UMC Contract Model 1911 pistol. These are always missing in high end 1911 collections!
