Extraordinary Silver Plated Gustave Young Factory Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolve
This is a fantastic example of a factory, Gustave Young engraved, silver plated Colt Model 1849 Pocket Model that was manufactured in 1860 with a rare Kidder case and accessories. This revolver is silver plated, beautifully engraved and fitted with smooth ivory grips. The grip frame screw heads are a niter blue while the frame screw heads are silver plated. The rear half of the barrel sides and upper flats, frame, loading lever, trigger guard bow, butt and upper and lower backstrap are floral scroll engraved. The left side of frame has a bird head amid the engraving and the barrel lug has an exaggerated hounds head amid the scroll pattern. The scroll engraving extends onto the hammer as well as Young's signature wolfs head on each side, and hand engraved checkering on the hammer spur. The outer edge of the wedge is engraved with a floral pattern. The top barrel flat is engraved "Saml Colt" in old English style, (very rarely found on these revolvers), "COLTS / PATENT" is marked on the left side of the frame and the cylinder is roll engraved with the stagecoach holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT / No 176767" in two panels. The complete matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and backstrap with an "I" above the barrel number and below the remaining numbers. The partial serial number "76767" is marked on the wedge and "6767" is marked on the arbor pin and loading lever. The revolver is fitted with one piece smooth ivory grips. The revolver is complete with a rare mahogany Kidder case with five compartments, brass corner protectors and brown velvet lining. Included in the case is a stars over eagle shield over "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" banner, brown lacquer flask, a brass two cavity bullet mold marked "COLTS / PATENT", "L" shaped screwdriver/nipple wrench, Eley Bros. 100 count cap tin (full), an unopened original box of combustible envelope cartridges, (6 count), sealed in plastic and three lead conical and two round lead bullets. The inside rear upper edge of the case is stamped "MANUFACTURED / SOLELY BY W. KIDDER." and "PATENT. APR. 1854.".
BBL: 4 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 31 percussion
Finish: silver
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 176767
Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 95% of the untouched original silver plating with some minor flaking on the barrel and cylinder and minor wear on the high edges of the trigger guard and on the butt. There is some minor scattered blistering and discoloration on the barrel and some high wear on the cylinder recesses. Nearly half of the original niter blue finish remains on the screw heads. The grip is excellent with a couple of minor age hairline stress lines on the bottom and a very attractive streaked patina. The case is very fine with minor handling marks on the exterior. The lining shows some wear, especially where the muzzle, cylinder and grip edge have made contact. There are a couple of small areas where the material is beginning to deteriorate. The accessories are all fine. An outstanding revolver engraved by Gustave Young (or his shop) and complete with accessories and a Kidder case. The highlight of any Colt or percussion revolver collection. Certainly a rare combination of engraving, silver plating and ivory grips, topped off with a rare Kidder made case and accessories.
