Extraordinary Leather Cased Colt Model 1848 Baby Dragoon Revolver with Accessories
Manufactured in 1848, this revolver was manufactured as a 4 inch barrel variant without the loading lever and the round cylinder stops. The top of the barrel is marked "ADDRESS SAML COLT / NEW-YORK CITY" flanked by bracket finials, "COLTS / PATENT" on the left side of the frame and the matching serial number is marked on the barrel, cylinder, frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. The partial serial number "180" is marked on the wedge and the arbor pin and "COLTS / PATENT", the serial number and the Ranger and Indian battle scene are marked on the cylinder. This revolver was finished blue on the barrel and cylinder, casehardened frame, and hammer, silver-plated brass trigger guard and backstrap. It has the square back trigger guard and fitted with smooth one piece walnut grips. Complete in a truly outstanding, rare leather covered partition case with brown velvet lining containing a lacquered flask, brass "COLTS / PATENT" marked two cavity bullet mold and niter blue nipple wrench/screwdriver.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel and cylinder retain 95% of the original blue finish with scattered minor spotting and a few minor dings on the barrel. The cylinder scene is crisp and clear. There are a few gouges on the top of the right side recoil shield and on one of the cylinder shoulders. The trigger guard and backstrap retain 99% of the original silver plating with some fine blistering on the backstrap and some edge wear. The silver is nearly all intact beginning to darken with age around the trigger guard bow and on the butt. There is some strong original case colors on the frame and hammer with a mix of smooth gray and dark patina on the balance. The grip is also very fine with 95% original varnish, some minor lower edge wear, a very small chip on the right toe and a some minor dings and dents. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is fine. The case is very fine with some minor scuffs on the exterior, some of the totally original lining has a couple of tears and overall some minor contact wear. The nipple wrench/screwdriver retains 98% of the original bright blue finish and the flask and mold are both excellent. One will probably never have an opportunity to buy another one of these!
