1) Born in 1879, Walter Schmitt commanded an infantry regiment in the First World War, ending his career in the Reichswehr as a Major shortly after his release from a French POW camp. Joining the Nazi Party in 1931, the SA in 1932 and the SS shortly after, Schmitt made a rapid ascent through the ranks, becoming chief of the SS Personnel Main Office in 1939, a General in the Waffen-SS in 1942, and became a substitute member of the Reichstag in 1943. At war's end, Schmitt faced a tribunal in Prague, resulting in his execution in 1945. The set consists of a small stamp with "W.SCH./SS" for the imprint, an ink blotter, and a pen holder, all made from a gray brown marble. The blotter and pen holder are adorned with engraved silver death's head logos, and the holder has a lidded compartment with 2 glass ink vials and a silver plaque inscribed "ZUM 60. GEBURTSTAG FUR DEN PERSONALCHEF/DES REICHSFUHRERS SS/WALTER SCHMITT/AM 13. 1. 1939". Included with the group is a large collection of material on Schmitt, including a copy of the book "A Pictorial History of the SS 1923-1945" by Hugh Trevor-Roper, which includes a picture of Schmitt shaking hands with Hitler, 2) Leather folio, 11 1/2 inches wide and 14 3/4 inches tall, with a deeply embossed, black ink accented Nazi eagle on the front, a diamond pattern on the rear, and a brown cloth lining on the inside.
