Established on 21 January 1938, the German Academy for Aeronautical Research was an elite think tank, with the Commemorative Medal doubling as a membership badge and indicator of rank within the Academy; the Gold Medal was used for full members, as well as Honorary Members, leading lights in the field of aeronautics and major political figures. Members of all ranks had a choice between a large medal, a pin-back style similar in size to a Luftwaffe badge, or a small medal, like this one, suitable for wear on the lapel. Measuring 2 inches across, the medal bears an eagle carrying a swastika, similar to the one on the Luftwaffe pilot badger, outlined with a hollow oak leaf wreath. The rear of the medal is marked "25", "LN/1700" and "800". The medal is suspended from a stick pin, decorated with 3 oak leaves at the top and fitted with a spring loaded retainer.
