The Kirkpatrick Brothers made two special snake jugs specifically for presentation to the Smithsonian Institute at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. The Snake Jug offered at auction is quite possibly one of the prototypes of the gifted jug to the Smithsonian. The large Albany slip glaze jug features the lower half of a man entering a hole in the side of the jug, incised below him is the words "Nice Young Man Just Going In" the opposite side of the jug features the top half of a man coming out of a hole in the jug with one of the fourteen snakes biting his head. The fourteen snakes vary in size and feature a cross hatching type design to represent the scales of a snake. It is obvious a lot of time was taken on making the snakes look lifelike as each of the snakes scales are carved with great detail. The largest snake appearing to come from inside the jug and forms the handle of the jug and rests on the top of the figural man's head. The remainder of the snakes with the exception of two are all standing at attention appearing to be waiting for their opportunity to take the next bite out of the man. One small frog figural sits near the left shoulder of the man. Underneath the large snake that forms the handle for the piece is the incised verbiage: "By Kirkpatrick/Anna Union Co Ill/Jan 1st 1876." The Kirkpatricks were vocal about their beliefs on politics, social issues and the temperance movement. This jug may represent their feeling regarding temperance and interestingly enough dated January 1, 1876 the most notable day to make resolutions and changes in one's life.
