Originating in the Old Country, the horn chair uses animal horns to form a significant amount of the frame and structure, creating an item that is both unique and attractive. Horn chairs of this style are mostly associated with Victorian-era America, particularly around Chicago, Kansas city and in Texas, where an artisan would have ready access to all the horn (from stock yards) they would need to practice their craft. These chairs were sold to hotels, photographers, or wealthy individuals of the Victorian era. Measuring 40 inches tall, 24 inches wide and 20 deep, the core of this chair is a cushioned seat, upholstered in black buggy seat leather, from which a series of 16 horns extend down to form a set of 4 legs with decorative accents, capped with brass and using more buggy seat leather for the joints. Rising up from the seat is a set of 30 horns, forming the high back and arm rests. The arm rests are wrapped on top with more leather, while the joints between horns are relief carved horn caps.

Condition: Fine. Some of the horn sections show cracks or absences, and a section of leather buggy seat material at the front of the seat is starting to come loose. A row of tacks has also been removed from the front edge of the seat, and a few small repairs have been made overall. An attractive piece of historical American art. It was obviously made by one of the top makers of the period!
