Earthenware Jar for secondary burial, 8th-12th C. AD or earlier. From a cave in Sarangani Province, southern Mindanao, Philippines. Shards of these are found in many caves, but rarely is an unbroken one discovered….and almost never this large. (That the heat of firing them was difficult to provide for such a large object is common knowledge among Philippine archaeologists - making the final product soft and weak. When one adds the often collapsing or falling of cave materials and the carelessness of visitors over the centuries, it is remarkable that ANY have survived). 17" tall by about 12-1/2" across, with a fine everted lip, only the highest ranking native Chieftain (Datu or early Sultan) would be accorded the honor of getting his bones taken out of the burial site, washed and reconsecrated, and finally placed in such an impressive Jar for eternity. It has cracks down both sides (which can be filled and strengthened), and is in excellent condition otherwise.
