Extensively deluxe engraved, 24 K gold inlaid, inscribed Colt SAA Sheriff’s Model revolver, .45 cal., 3” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, superb raised carved ivory grips, #044SE3 signed by contemporary firearms engraver Ken Hurst. Grips by Dennis Holland. This gun is in overall like new condition showing 99%+ of its custom finish with extensive engraving on all parts of the gun including the front sight, hammer and straps; gold inlays are also extensive including a raised gold portrait of Western Lawman Bill Tilghman on the left recoil shield, a silver lightning bolt on the loading gate; a silver buffalo skull on the front left side of the frame; a gold badge with the number “46” on the right front side of the frame; a silver crescent police badge with hanging star on the top of the back strap and a gold inlaid signature “Marshall Bill Tilghman” on the back strap; also engraved on the butt is “Greatest of All” and “Dep. Marshal” on the bottom of the trigger guard. The thick ivory grips are in fine condition and show a beautifully raised carving of the classic pose of Tilghman in his Police Chief’s uniform and hat with Colt SAA in a belt holster. Tilghman was one of the “Three Guardsmen” in Oklahoma. He started out as a buffalo hunter and then went into a series of law enforcement positions; as noted in the engraved dates on either side of the trigger guard, he was born in 1854 and died in 1924 when he was shot in the line of duty as Police Chief of Cromwell, Oklahoma at the age of 70 years old. A truly great piece of firearm artistry in the popular Sheriff’s Model variation and accomplished by a leading engraver of the 20th century. Accompanied by a letter from Jim Alaimo datd February 2, 2001, providing additional detailed information on this gun. Est.: $7,000-$14,000.
