Probably Experimental Breech-loading Percussion Single Shot Sporting Rifle, by J.P. Schenkl of Boston, Mass., NVSN, .44 cal., 24'' round-to-octagonal barrel with turned ring at juncture, with ''J.P. Schenkl's Patent. June 23, 1857 / Boston'' stamped on top flat; the same marking is repeated on receiver top tang. Steel blade front sight, single-leaf adjustable rear sight. Unique combination triggerguard/breech operating lever hinges to right, simultaneously cocking hammer, sliding barrel forward and lifting front-hinged breech open for loading of combustible paper cartridge. Walnut buttstock with high comb; brass buttplate with long top tang. Little is known of J.P. Schenkl: It is reported that a carbine made by Schenkl was tested by the West Point Board in 1857, and a Springfield U.S. Model 1842 Rifled Musket with an 1853-dated lockplate is stamped ''J.P. Schenkl's Patent'' on the upper tang. Condition is very good to fine with smooth metal having a light age patina, perhaps originally having been finished in the white. Stock retains most original varnish with minor finish loss and dings and scratches. Action is smooth; bore is shiny with sharp rifling. Rifle shows professional workmanship and very possibly is one-of-a-kind. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
