Designed expressly for removing the head of a stationary target, the executioner's sword (also known as the Sword of Justice) was made with a blunt tipped, non-tapering blade, which moved the center of balance forward, allowing for more powerful chopping strikes at the cost of maneuverability. Measuring 40 1/2 inches overall, this sword is fitted with a 30 1/2 inch long, 2 1/8 inch wide blade that is possibly 17th century, "AN GOTTES SIEGEN" and "IST ALLES GELIGEN" are marked in the short ricassos (roughly translated, "Through God's will, all things are possible"), with a wheel of fortune on one side, and the gallows on the other, all filled with bronze. Straight bar guard, 8 3/4 inches across, with a cord wrapped grip and a flared cylindrical pommel. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection
