Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 70
This is a beautiful example of an early post WWII Winchester Model 70 Super Grade carbine in the very rare and desirable 7 M/M or commonly termed the 7 x 57mm caliber. This caliber was introduced in 1929 and was last cataloged in 1936, so the standard production was very limited and is probably one of the most difficult calibers to locate today. All Super Grade Model 70s exhibited the best workmanship that Winchester could provide at this time, with this excellent example being manufactured in mid 1948 time frame. As noted this beautiful example is in the very desirable carbine configuration with the short 20 inch barrel, that has a standard front sight, with a blank, rear sight filler plate and a Lyman 48 WJS micrometer rear sight. It has a very late Type II or very early Type III transitional receiver with the new style rear tang. The front receiver ring has the matted top while the rear bridge has the smooth non-matted surface and both the receiver ring and rear bridge have been factory drilled and tapped for scope bases, both properly filled with factory plug screws. The rear bridge still has the wide screw hole spacing and as noted the receiver has the new style tapered rear receiver tang introduced in late 1948. It is fitted with a matching serial numbered (81585), Type II bolt with the earlier Type II-1 safety lever. The barrel as noted is 20 inches long and is marked on the underside of the chamber area "7 M/M 46", which indicated the year of the barrel blank. The left side of the barrel is roll marked with the Type 3a barrel format markings that consist of the two-line Winchester address, Trademark and Winchester Proof Steel barrel marking followed by "Model 70--- 7 M/M/". The floor plate is correctly marked "SUPER GRADE" in the center. It has an original early Winchester Super Grade carbine walnut stock with the small oval cheekpiece on the left side with the checkered forend and pistol grip area with the Winchester marked hard rubber grip cap, deluxe Super Grade detachable sling swivels (now absent) along with the bakelite forend tip.
BBL: 20 inch round
Stock: walnut checkered
Gauge: 7 mm Mauser

Serial Number: 81585

Excellent with 98% of the original Winchester blue finish overall with only minor edge and high spot wear. The bolt remains in the white as factory polished, with the matching serial number underneath. The stock is very fine with 95% of the original factory varnish showing minor nicks and chips in the varnish, mixed with some minor handling marks and scratches. The checkering on the sides of the forend and pistol grip area is nice and distinct overall. As noted this is a very rare and desirable Super Grade Carbine produced in the extremely rare 7 M/M caliber.
