This is an exceptional example of a very late WWII 98K sniper rifle that was manufactured by Gustloff-Werke factory that has the standard bcd/4 coded receiver, that has been factory fitted with a rare machine gun barrel. These rifles were the final attempt by the Germans to be able to quickly and cheaply produce an accurate sniper rifle under wartime conditions. Factory installed machine gun barrels have been noted on many Gustloff (bcd) coded rifles but not on their sniper versions. These long side rail variants were produced by utilizing an actual enlarged receiver that was machined to accept the long scope base mounted to the left side. This model was the most successful of the various sniper rifle configurations with over 100,000 actually manufactured before the end of the war. The top of the receiver ring top has the standard wartime code of "bcd/4". The top and right side of the receiver is correctly proofed with a standard eagle/1 and eagle/749 Waffenamt, along with a single eagle firing proof. The left rear side of the barrel only has a single Eagle firing proof and the serial number (90782) stamped in front of the receiver. The stock is an excellent late war laminated version that is unnumbered, but has both the Heers Eagle H proof on the right side of the stock with the small eagle 37 proof in the pistol grip area with a single small letter "c" on the underside of the stock with the desirable checkered buttplate. It has the late war stamped and welded front and rear barrel bands, both are unnumbered and unproofed, with a milled trigger guard and floor plate. The trigger guard only a single letter "d" proof on the flat directly in front of the floor plate. The rifle has a standard wartime bolt with the single bolt guide on top with a small number "1" proof on the underside of the bolt handle root, with the last four digits of the serial number on top. It is fitted with the standard 98K safety and cocking assembly, correctly numbered to the rifle. The scope itself is a late war all blued version marked on the left side, "Dialytan 4X/dkl" (for the Schneider & Co. Optische Werkes Kreuznach) with a single small blue cross mark behind the markings. The receiver is fitted with a blued scope base mounted to the left side, which has a unnumbered blued long side rail type mount that has a single upside down Eagle 359 proofed towards the front end. The mount is fitted with the late war all blued, scope wide bands, as used on the late mounts. It is complete with a cleaning rod, front sight cover, a nice original smooth sided leather sling and a modern replacement rubber eye cup.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: laminated
Gauge: 7.92 mm Mauser
Finish: blue/phosphate
Grips:
Serial Number: 90782
Condition: Excellent with 98% of the original late war, phosphate finish overall. The stock and handguard are both in excellent condition showing no noticeable handing marks anywhere with clear sharp proofs. The scope base and mount retain 98% of the original blued finish with only minor edge and high spots wear overall. The scope has 95% of it's blued finish overall with the blue finish thinning, browning somewhat in the middle of the scope tube, with minor paint chips and loss on the front objective sunshade exterior. The optics are clear and sharp. The late war variant rifle has matching numbered rifle component parts with the scope mount, base and stock unnumbered. An excellent example of a very scarce late war Gustloff 98K sniper rifle.
