This is an exceptionally rare example of probably the very first actual Luger pistol as manufactured by the newly renamed "Mauser" factory. Consequently these 1934 commercial contract Luger pistols were produced for sale inside German and were usually made up of a combination of left over DWM factory parts along with "Newly" manufactured Mauser luger parts. The total production quantity for this model is estimated to be approximately 300 total with not more than a handful actually in collections today, primarily due to their heavy use in the early days of the Nazi era and the fact that many of them were later pulled back into the military/police system, modified and reissued to the German police. The general serial number range for this specific pistol falls between "777v to 1220v" and as you can see this specific pistol is a fairly early production model. The top of the chamber area is blank with the standard "DWM" markings on front toggle. The right side of the barrel extension, the left side of the breechblock and the underside of the barrel all have the early Crown/U commercial proof. The front of the frame and underside of the barrel both carry the full serial number of 858v with the various smaller parts only marked with the last two digits of the serial number. The only exception is the replace hold-open which is numbered "32" and the firing pin "50". It is fitted with the standard checkered walnut grips and it has an early nickel plated unmarked commercial magazine with the aluminum base that is marked with only "MADE IN GERMANY" on the bottom.
BBL: 4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm Luger
Finish: blue/straw
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 858v
Condition: Very fine overall with 98% of an old arsenal style refurbished blue finish overall, with clear markings and proofs with the various small parts retaining 95% of their restrawed colors overall. The grips are in very good plus condition overall with nice checkering overall showing a light wear across the tops of the checkering, with only a couple of minor light wear areas on right side. As noted the pistol itself has mostly matching numbers on the various parts except for the hold-open and firing pin that is marked as noted above. A very nice example of a rare Early 1934 Commercial Mauser/DWM contract Luger. These are absent from most collections and are seldom found in any condition. A quite rare and prized variation test
