Exceptional original English-cased pepperbox pistol by Charles Jones of 26 St. James St. London. Engraved with cast metal alloy frame, numbered “261”, case-hardened barrels, blued mounts, deluxe English style case with maker’s label in lid. The pepperbox measures 8-3/4” overall with 3-3/8” barrel group of .41 caliber, six shots. The barrels retain 40 – 60% original case hardening, just normal fading and aging with considerable areas of rainbow colors showing lightly. The alloy frame is crisp with the high quality engraving Jones is noted for. The pistol is stocked in burl walnut, and the grips are good to very good with 50 – 60% varnish. Some wear marks and nicks on left grip from being carried against a person on right side. The trigger guard shows 60 – 70% thinning robin’s egg blue finish and trigger shows 90% bright blue. The hammer shows 75 – 85% case hardening. The hammer safety shows 90%plus bright fire blue finish. The action is crisp and the pistol shows very little use. The pepperbox shows the outside sear and spring patented by Jones. The pistol is contained within its original to the period blue felt-lined English style case, which remains in very good condition. The case is equipped with an original lacquered flask in very good plus condition with 90% lacquer, bright blue on spring, and just some slight scratches. An original scissor mold, oil bottle, cap box, barrel removal tool, screwdriver, and case hardened loader. The original maker’s label is retained in the lid which reads, “Charles Jones / Patentee / Of their Majesties / The King of England and The King of the French / Membre ee L Academie de I_ndustrie de France / Cun Manufacturer. / 26 St James’s Street / London / Also Inventor & Manufacturer of the Patent Waterproof Locks with Concentric Sears & Triggers.” The label remains in good to very good condition with some staining and minor tears. The exterior of the case is brass bound and veneered mahogany or walnut, and shows some age cracks, minor scratches, but is at least good to very good overall. A very nice quality English pepperbox by one of the most well-known and best quality makers. Also reference the American, British, and Continental Pepperbox Firearms book for a similar example.
