This is an excellent example of the very scarce and very desirable WWII German M30 Luftwaffe survival drilling rifle as manufactured by the J. P. Sauer and Sohns company. The M30 Drilling was standard issue to Luftwaffe bomber crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater and was intended to provide a high quality survival rifle in the event of a forced landing. These are a three-barreled combination guns; double barrel 12 gauge, over a 9.3X74R rifle barrel. These drilling rifles exhibit the beautiful, high quality, pre-war workmanship that the J. P. Sauer and Sohns factory is noted for, which consists of a high polish rust blued metal finish on the barrel, sling swivels and barrel release lever with a beautiful color case hardened finish on the receiver, trigger guard and forend latching mechanism that is combined with a hand checkered European walnut pistol grip stock and forearm that have a hand rubbed oil finish. The quality of the fit and finish on these weapons rivals anything that was produced in the U.S. The bottom of the rear barrel lug has a single "stick Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark and the underside of each barrel has the Commercial "Eagle/N" proofmarks, along with the bore and gauge/caliber markings, "12/65" and is dated 9-41 for the month and year of manufacture. Both shotgun barrels and the rifle barrel are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". The serial number "336882" is located on the underside of the rifle barrel, on the left receiver rail and on the very end of the trigger guard tang. The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel also has the larger "Luftwaffe Eagle" Luftwaffe mark carrying the Nazi Swastika. The barrel has a matted rib with brass bead front sight. This drilling has a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever. The top left edge of the receiver rail is marked with the matching serial number "336882" with the intertwined "SS" proof for the Sauer & Sohns factory along with the Commercial Eagle "N" firing proof on the right side. Both sides of the receiver are marked with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL" with a larger intertwined "SS" logo on the underside of the receiver. The stock has a small European oval cheekpiece and a casehardened pistol grip cap with a black plastic serrated buttplate that has the intertwined "SS" logo of the Sauer & Sohns, factory in the center. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with a large prominent "Luftwaffe Eagle/Swastika" insignia. The partial serial number, "6882" is stamped on the inside of the forearm. The top of the receiver tang has a sliding barrel selector catch, and is marked directly behind that with a small "W./St.". When engaged, the rifle barrel selector raises a folding, 100 meter, rifle rear sight on the barrel rib and engages the forward trigger for firing the rifle barrel. The front trigger can be pushed forward to activate a "single set" trigger. This rifle has a diminutive high quality scroll engraving on the receiver, trigger guard, and engraved screw heads, with the forearm and pistol grip finely checkered. The drilling is packed in an aluminum carrying case that has the dark gray/green painted exterior with a very small "Eagle/2 Luftwaffe stick Eagle" proof on the very front directly above the carrying handle. This is the only Luftwaffe case that this describer has even seen. The inside lid of the carrying case contains a black stenciled listing of the original contents of the case. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling, ammunition, cleaning equipment and sling. The rifle also includes an original leather sling, that still has the small original piece of tape holding it together, a three section wooden cleaning rod with a brass jag, a very RARE Original copy of the WWII factory manual, along with a reproduction copy, and two boxes of new 9.3 X 74R hunting ammunition, one made by RWS (full) and the other manufactured by the NORMA factory, (contains 18 full rounds and two fired cases).
BBL: 25 1/2 round
Stock: walnut checkered
Gauge: 9.3x74
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 336882
Condition: Excellent, with 99% of the original blued finish on the barrels and barrel locking lever, with 95% of the original factory coloring which shows strong vivid colors overall with just a hint of fading of the colors on the edges or high spots in a couple of places, the forend take down latch and along the lower front edges or radius of the receiver. Even the trigger guard shows sharp, vivid case colors, which is usually where you see a lot of the wear from handling. The stock and forend are both excellent with just the lower edge of the cheekpiece and lower left side of the stock showing any appropriate finish loss with just a couple of old pressure dents on the lower left and right side directly in front of the buttplate. The checkering on both the stock and forend is in excellent condition with nice sharp diamonds overall with only one small old pressure dent on the left side of the pistol grip area, directly at the very bottom edge of the checkered panel. The metal storage case is also in exceptional condition showing 98% of the original dark gray/green paint with wear really only on the edges or corners with some paint flaking on the underside. The hand painted nomenclature/model markings on top of the lid is also in excellent condition overall and show only a couple of scrapes in a few of the letters but otherwise 95% intact. This is definitely one of the finer Luftwaffe Drillings that we have had the pleasure to offer for sale, an excellent example of a high quality J. P. Sauer and Sohns drilling.
