This extraordinary, as issued, unused Model 1851 Cadet Musket was manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1853. Springfield Armory manufactured a total of 1,160 percussion smoothbore cadet muskets in 1853 and a total of 4000 cadet muskets between 1852 and 1853. The Cadet Musket utilized the same lock as the Model 1847 Musketoon and featured a shorter barrel and stock with smaller buttplate in addition to the smaller, .57 caliber, bore. The musket is "National Armory Bright" and has a an oil-finished, black walnut, stock. The musket has three, spring fastened barrel bands and a steel, trumpet head ramrod. The double strap upper barrel band has an integral brass front sight blade. The bevel edged lockplate is roll-stamped "SPRING/FIELD/1852" in three lines behind the hammer and is stamped with an Eagle/Shield motif over the small letters "U.S." in front of the hammer The barrel tang is dated "1853" and small "V/P/Eagle head" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel. "U.S." is stamped on the buttplate ahead of the top screw. The stock is not marked. The musket is complete with a Model 1851 Cadet Musket Bayonet with 14 1/2 Inch fluted blade. The socket features shoulders both in front and behind the locking ring and the face of the blade is stamped "U.S.".

Condition: Excellent plus, as issued. The musket barrel and bolster are in crisp original armory bright polish. The edges of the stock surrounding the lockplate, the barrel channel and the edges of the left flat are very sharp. The lock has nearly all of the original polish. The lockplate and barrel markings are crisp. The scarce Model 1851 Cadet Bayonet is also excellent. This is a scarce limited production Springfield Armory musket and bayonet in extraordinary original condition. They can only be as good as this example; not better!
