Exceptional Spencer Patent Model 1865 Repeating Saddle Ring Carbine with Stabler Cut-Off

Fixed blade front sight and carbine style folding rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The top of the receiver is marked "MODEL/1865" followed by the four line Spencer/Burnside marking. The carbine has a Stabler cut-off device and a saddle ring bar mounted on the left stock wrist. The left rear side of the barrel has a "J. L.C" inspection mark with most of the components having single letter inspection marks. The matching serial number is marked on the top rear of the receiver and on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a sling swivel on the barrel band, two sharp boxed cartouches on the left side of the stock directly behind the ring base and sling swivel. Although most Model 1865 Spencer carbines were delivered too late for use in the Civil War, they were used extensively by cavalry regiments on the frontier until replaced by the U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Carbine.

Condition: Extremely fine. The barrel retains 90% original blue finish with some thinning to a smooth plum. The remaining parts retain 95% original bright case colors. The wood is very fine with crisp cartouches and an area of small gouges on the lower left side of the forearm and some scattered minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
