This is an exceptional example of a Model 1865 Spencer Carbine. Fixed blade front sight and folding rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Combination trigger guard and lever operates the unique Spencer action, extracting the spent casing on the down stroke and chambering a fresh round from the tube magazine in the buttstock on the upstroke. This carbine is equipped with the Stabler cut-off mounted directly ahead of the trigger. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING (faint) / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS. / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860" and the matching serial number is marked behind the hammer and on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm. "M 1865" is marked on top of the barrel at the breech and there is a "crown / V" British proofmark on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. There are small "M", "W", and "E" sub-inspection marks on most of the parts. Blue barrel and casehardened remaining parts, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left wrist and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a sling swivel. The left side of the stock behind the saddle ring bar is a boxed "EAW" cartouche stamped vertically and a "DAP" stamped horizontally. The top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang is a small "DAP" and there is a small brass collection tag marked "728" behind the lower tang. The Spencer Repeating Company exported some rifles and carbines after the Civil War but the history of the British proofmarks on this carbine is unknown. Although most Model 1865 Spencer carbines were delivered too late for use in the Civil War, they were used extensively by cavalry regiments on the frontier until replaced by the U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Carbine.
