Exceptional Spencer Commercial Repeating Sporting Rifle

Manufactured as part of the first fully commercial production of the Spencer Repeating Rifle; while Spencer was doing solid business starting in 1860, their entire capacity was consumed by military contracts and the occasional presentation arm. Sales were limited; large quantities of Spencers were floating around as military surplus, and trends in rifle shooting favored more powerful cartridges than the action could be designed to handle, leading to the demise of the firm. Dovetailed blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 300 meters, with a spring loaded peep sight mounted to the receiver and "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS./PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860." on the top flat. No makers marks are present on the lock plate, with a small "VIB" crossed scepter proof. Smooth straight wrist varnished stock, with a pewter forearm tip and a smooth buttplate with magazine tube.

Extremely fine with over 95% of the original blue finish on the barrel, showing some light spotting, handling marks, and a few scattered patches of brown patina. 70% case colors are present on the frame, strongest in the protected areas, with a mixed gray patina on the lock and a number of dents on the lever and breechblock. The stock is near excellent, with some dents and scuffs overall, and some light chipping around the wrist. Mechanically excellent.
