Exceptional, Scarce Springfield Armory U.S. Model 1851 Cadet Musket with Bayonet
These Cadet Muskets were made from 1851-1853 and utilized the small Model 1847 Musketoon lock. A total of 4000 of these scaled-down muskets were manufactured and issued to various cadet organizations including the famous Virginia Military Institute (VMI). The lock plate is marked: "SPRING / FIELD / 1852" vertically behind the hammer and is stamped with the eagle and shield above "US" in front of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1853" and the left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V / P / eagle head" proofmarks. The musket has a iron ramrod with solid, trumpet-shaped head. Includes "US" marked Model 1851 Cadet Bayonet with 15 inch blade. Model 1851 Cadet Muskets were carried by the VMI Cadets at the Battle of New Market, Virginia in 1864.

Excellent plus, unissued. The arsenal bright finish has toned slightly to a smooth silver. The stock is excellent plus with a few barely noticeable minor dings and dents, mostly concentrated on the lower edge of the left flat, and sharp edges. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The bayonet is fine with a gray patina and scattered minor pitting. A truly extraordinary example of a very scarce U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1841 Cadet Musket.
