Exceptional Scarce Colt Berdan Russian Contract Rifle
There were approximately 30,200 manufactured from 1866 to 1870 and of those all but about 200 were sent to Russia. (The aforementioned rifles saw extreme use and this specimen, due to it's extraordinary condition, is not one of those.) It is a trapdoor type action chambered for the 42 center-fire cartridge. The rifle was designed and the patent held by Hiram Berdan, the commander of the Civil War "Sharpshooters" Regiment and was actually Colt's first cartridge arm. The barrel is fitted with an inverted "V" front sight on a dovetailed block and folding leaf sight that graduates to 1,400 meters just ahead of the receiver. There is a bayonet lug mounted on the right side of the barrel 1 1/4" from the muzzle. One-line Russian Cyrillic markings between the rear sight and the lower barrel band. The breechblock, trigger and receiver have a casehardened finish, cocking lever is bright ; other components are blue. Full oil finished straight grip walnut stock with a steel end cap, original cleaning rod and steel buttplate. There is a sling swivel mounted on the front of the trigger guard and on the front barrel band. These Russian contract rifles were subject to heavy attrition and are very scarce in any condition.

Serial Number: NSN

Excellent plus. The barrel retains 99% original blue finish with a few light handling marks. The trigger guard retains 99% original blue finish with some edge wear and light scratches and the buttplate retains approximately 90% original blue finish with wear on the heel and toe. The breechblock and receiver retain virtually all of the original bright case colors. The stock is excellent with a few minor pressure dents, a small gouge on the right side forearm area and overall a few minor dings and dents. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. This is a significant and rarely encountered Colt rifle in excellent condition and would be nearly impossible to improve upon. This is the finest example of a Colt Berdan rifle that we have ever offered at auction.
