Exceptional Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver

Estimate: $8500 - 12000
This is a excellent and totally original example of a Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver. These revolvers were manufactured circa 1875 to 1889 with a total production of only about 25,000. The top of the barrel is marked "REMINGTON & SONS. ILLION. N.Y. U.S.A.". The left side of the frame is stamped "44" in front of the cylinder indicating the revolver is chambered for the .44-40 cartridge. The serial/batch number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip. All nickel finish, manufactured without a lanyard on the butt, and fitted with smooth two-piece walnut grips. Considerable mystery surrounds the Model 1875. There are no known U.S military contracts. In 1883 about 1,300 nickel plated revolvers were purchased by the Interior Department for use by Indian Police on the Western reservations, 10,000 were purchased by the Egyptian Government and the Mexican Government purchased 1,000 in the 1880s. Writer believes this exceptional example escaped those contracts due to its excellent condition.
