Exceptional Rare Early Production Colt, Serial Number 2, Small Frame, Model 1855 Revolving 20 Gauge
This is an extraordinary, original serial number 2, Colt Model 1855, Small Frame Revolving Shotgun manufactured in 1860. This .60 caliber (20 gauge), shotgun has a round barrel with 3 1/8-inch, semi-octagonal breech. The barrel has a brass bead front sight and iron under-rib with two iron cleaning rod pipes. The shotgun has a sighting groove in the top-strap, five-shot fluted cylinder, loading lever rammer with indented head and iron small bow trigger guard. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnish finish. The wedge fastened forearm has a nickel-silver tip and oval wedge escutcheon. The stock has an iron shotgun buttplate. The shotgun has a wooden wiping rod with brass tip. The barrel, frame and cylinder have a high polish blue finish. The loading lever, hammer, cylinder pin, trigger guard and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The top of the breech flat is roll-stamped: "{COLT'S PT./1856}" in two lines followed by: "{ ADDRESS COL. COLT/HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.}" in two lines. The serial number, "2", is stamped on the underside of the frame, the underside of the trigger guard finial and on the toe of the buttplate. Colt manufactured approximately 500, .60 caliber, Model 1855 Revolving Shotguns between 1860 and 1863. This example, serial number 2, may be the first small frame Model 1855 Shotgun sold to the public.

Condition: Very fine. The shotgun is in exceptional condition and retains 75% of the original, high polish blue finish. The barrel and under-rib have 95% of the blue finish. The frame shows handling wear on the top strap and the upper tang. The cylinder blue has faded to a smooth brown patina on contact points; generous amounts of blue remain in protected areas. The shotgun shows only limited firing wear with small amounts of flash pitting on the percussion nipples, cylinder face and edges of the frame. The loading lever, hammer, trigger guard and buttplate retain 60% of the original case colors. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm are in excellent condition with more than 90% of the original varnish finish and only very minor handling wear. The barrel markings and serial numbers are crisp. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This scarce, serial number 2, small frame, Model 1855 Revolving Shotgun is in exceptional, original condition and would be very difficult to replace as writer cannot recall ever seeing Number 1 offered for sale. This may be the lowest number extant!
