Exceptional Pre-War Colt Model 1911A1 National Match Pistol with Schwartz Safety and Colt Box
This is a beautiful example of a very rare and desirable Pre-War Colt M1911A1 National Match pistol that was produced with the extremely rare Schwartz Safety. Developed circa 1938, the Swartz safety was very innovative for the time, adding a firing pin block inside the slide, which is disengaged when the trigger is pulled, preventing out-of-battery or drop related discharges. Although the design did not catch on during the initial production run, it would later be part of the upgrades made to the Series 80 Government Model Pistols. Produced in 1939, this pistol is fitted with the early style fixed sights, with the two line address and patent markings on the left side of the slide and "NATIONAL MATCH COLT" and "AUTOMATIC/ CALIBRE .45" on the right side. The frame is marked "GOVERNMENT MODEL" on the right side over the serial number, with "60" and "P/ VP" on the trigger guard, wide hammer, long grip safety, arched mainspring housing, checkered trigger, post 1924 checkered slide stop, the post 1918 (third model) checkered thumb safety and fully checkered grips. Expertly hand fitted at the factory, with super smooth action, "COLT .45 AUTO MATCH" select match barrel, and very tight slide fit. With an unnumbered Colt black box, cleaning rod in wrapping, papers, and test target numbered to match the gun.

Excellent plus overall with 99% of the original pre-war blued finish, showing mild scratching on the slide and around the pins and light edge wear. Grips are excellent, with a few minor pressure dents and sharp checkering. Box is good, with a tear on the front of the lid, wear along the spine and high edges and mild scuffs. Mechanically excellent. Pre-War National Match pistols are extremely rare in any condition, to say nothing of a pistol of this quality fitted with the Schwartz Safety, which is tough to match, let alone improve on.
