This is an excellent example of a 1938 manufactured Colt Single Action Army Revolver. The barrel is roll-stamped with the second style .44-40 marking ("COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER .44-40") which was introduced in 1923 and used until 1938 on the left side. This is one of the last Colt .44-40 Single Actions to bear the "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" legend. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." The Colt two-line/two-date patent markings followed by the Rampant Colt trademark is stamped on the left side of the frame. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "75". The left front trigger guard bow is stamped with a "T" assembler's mark and the Colt "Triangle VP" proofmark. The serial number is located on the bottom of the frame. The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish with polished hammer sides and vivid case colors on the frame and loading gate. The two-piece checkered hard rubber grips feature the Rampant Colt trademark in an oval at the top. The revolver has a spare caliber .44 Special cylinder, which is stamped "44" on the rear face and marked with the five-pointed star indicating extra grade steel on the front face.
BBL: 5 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44-40 WCF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: hard rubber
Serial Number: 356416
Condition: Excellent as it appears to be unfired and retaining 99% of the original blue and casehardened finish. Wear is limited to a trace of finish loss on the left side of the muzzle and some very minor flaking on the left recoil shield and loading gate. The cylinder has only traces of drag marks. The spare cylinder has 99% of the original blue finish and does not appear to have been fitted into the revolver. Fiery case colors are exhibited on the frame. The grips are nearly new showing traces of age browning. This is an exceptional example of a very late production, pre-war Colt Single Action revolver. This is one of the last, if not the last, pre-war Single Actions with "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" barrel markings. It would be difficult to improve upon this outstanding revolver.
