Exceptional Peabody Breech-Loading Carbine
Peabody Breech-Loading Carbine manufactured by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, Rhode Island, between 1866 and 1871. The .50 caliber carbine has a blued barrel with casehardened barrel band, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate. The walnut stock and forearm have an oil finish. The barrel is fitted with a folding leaf rear sight and a sling ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the legend: "PEABODY'S PAT./JULY 22, 1862/MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I." in five lines. The Peabody inspection mark for foreign contract arms which consists of the script letters "W.C." in a rectangle is stamped on the left stock wrist. The carbine has no visible foreign proofmarks or state property marks.

Excellent plus. The carbine is in un-issued condition and retains at least 98% of the original blue and casehardened finish. The case colors on the barrel band, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate are vivid. The receiver markings are sharp. The stock and forearm are in nearly perfect condition (there is one minor scratch on the forearm) with a crisp Peabody inspection mark. This is an excellent example of a Peabody Breech-Loading Carbine.
