Exceptional Griffin and Howe Custom 98 Bolt Action Varmint Rifle with Unertl Target Scope

This is a beautiful example of a custom long range varmint rifle as manufactured by the prestigious firm of Griffin & Howe on a post-war Fabrique Nationale 98 Mauser style rifle action, in the rare "22-250-3000" cartridge. For those of you that don't recognize this cartridge it is one of the very early varmint rounds originally developed in circa 1937, by Jerry E. Gebby, based on the original 250-Savage, as developed by Charles Newton. Jerry Gebby was a wildcatter and the first to neck the 250-Savage cartridge to .224 caliber and load it to muzzle velocity of 3000 fps. He named this cartridge the "Varminter" and is actually the forerunner of the later Remington 22-250 varmint cartridge. This beautiful rifle was manufactured by the very famous and well known New York Company of Griffin & Howe. The G&H company has been manufacturing custom rifles since the 1920s, and is well known for producing some the finest custom rifles and shotguns guns in the World. Their quality and attention to detail is what most current custom gunsmiths aspire to duplicate. As noted this rifle is based on the tried and true 98 Mauser type action as manufactured by FN Herstale in 1953. The rifle was fitted with a medium weight sporter contour barrel similar to the Remington 700 varmint pattern barrels. The top is marked "No. 2292GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK", with the left breech end marked "22-25-3000 VARMINTER". The action is marked on the lower right side of the action is marked with the circled "FN" logo followed by 1953, and "MANUFACTURED IN BELGIUM". The rifle is stocked with a very nice straight grain walnut stock with the smaller European style cheek piece with a wide forend and fine lined checkering in the pistol grip area and sides of the forend. It is fitted with a neidner style grip cap and detachable sling swivel bases (only, no sling loops), and a black leather covered pad. The rifle has been fitted with an Unertl 2 inch target scope with Posa aline mounts. The scope is 24 inches long, with a 1 inch tube and a 2 inch adjustable head. This rifle has been fitted with an adjustable Timney style trigger assembly and the action has been glassed bedded in the stock.
