Exceptional Factory Cased Colt Model 1855 Side-Hammer Pocket Revolver with Ivory Grips
This spectacular Colt Model 1855 Side-Hammer Pocket Revolver was manufactured in 1862. This ''Model 3'' revolver has a .28 caliber octagon barrel and five-shot fluted cylinder with round loading lever and ball latch. The revolver has a high polish, commercial blue, finish on the barrel frame and cylinder. The loading lever, hammer, trigger and cylinder pin have a color casehardened finish. The one-piece grip is ivory. The top barrel flat is roll stamped: "+COLT'S PT./1855+" in two lines followed by "ADDRESS COL. COLT/HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.+" with three Maltese Crosses. "PATENTED SEPT. 10. 1850" is stamped in one cylinder flute. The serial number, "28792" is stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the butt. The revolver has a mahogany case with five compartments. The American style case is lined with purple velvet. The case contains the following accessories: (1) 250 cap tin of Eley percussion caps with green label and blue paper wrapping, (2) steel screwdriver with wooden handle, (3) Eagle and Shield powder flask with two rows of stars above the eagle and embossing on both sides of the lacquer-finished body, (4) two-cavity brass bullet mold for balls and conical bullets with bow legs and bright-finished spruce cutter marked: "COLTS/PATENT", and (5) key. All of the accessories appear to be original to the casing.
BBL: 3 1/2 Inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 28 Percussion
Finish: blue
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 28792
Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 95% plus of the bright original high polish blue and casehardened finish. Nearly all of the finish wear is confined to one area of flaking on the cylinder that covers two chambers (see photo). The balance of the blue finish shows very little evidence of handling. Nearly all of the original vivid casehardened finish remains intact. The ivory grip has some age discoloration on the upper right side but remains in excellent condition. The case exterior is in excellent condition; wear is limited to several minor scratches in the lid. The lining is in very fine totally original condition; there is some fading in the lid and one small tear on the edge of a partition. The cap tin is un-opened and has most of the blue wrapping with several tears in the end label. The screwdriver is in very good condition. The powder flask is in excellent plus condition and retains nearly all of the brown lacquer finish on the body and most gold plated finish on the top and charger. The bullet mold is in mint condition and shows almost no wear. This is an exceptional example of a factory cased Colt Model 3, 1855 Side-Hammer Pocket revolver with attractive ivory grips.
