This is an excellent original example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1905. The rifle is accompanied by a datafax from the Cody Firearms Museum that states the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on November 12, 1906. The fax documents the rifle as caliber .45-70 with a standard configuration round barrel. The rifle has blue finish with casehardened hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm have a high polish varnish finish. The 26-inch round barrel has a "Winchester Express" front sight with ivory bead and a folding leaf rear sight. A folding combination sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-70" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. Oval Winchester "W/P" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped in two lines behind the trigger and the serial number, "135901" is stamped behind the lever.
BBL: 26 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-70 Government
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 135901
Condition: Excellent plus. The rifle retains 98% of the bright original blue and casehardened finish overall. The barrel, magazine and forearm cap have nearly all of the blue finish intact. Finish wear on the receiver is limited to some very minor edge wear on the upper right side. The hammer, lever and buttplate have nearly all of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The markings on the barrel and receiver are crisp. The stock and forearm are excellent with nearly all of the original high polish varnish, wear is limited to a few scattered and very insignificant storage marks on the lower portion of the forearm and stock. This is an exceptional example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle; one which would be difficult to improve upon!
