Colt Lightning Slide Action Carbine manufactured in 1891. This carbine was part of the famous Albert Foster collection. The carbine is listed in the James E. Serven catalog of the Foster collection published in September 1948. The carbine has the rare combination of blued barrel and magazine and nickel plated frame, hammer and buttplate. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The forearm is checkered. The carbine has the traditional carbine barrel band, block mounted steel front sight, folding leaf rear sight, saddle ring on the left side of the frame and carbine buttplate. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO.HARTFORD CT. U.S.A./PATENTED MAY 29.SEPT.18.83. MAY.26.85. JUNE 15.86.FEB.22.87." ahead of the rear sight. "44 Cal" is boldly stamped on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Rampant Colt trademark. The serial number, "56565", is stamped on the lower tang. Albert Foster was a Colt executive who assembled one of the most extensive collections of firearms in the United States in the years prior to WWII. Many of the firearms illustrated in the James E. Serven catalogue of the Foster Collection are still immediately recognizable as the finest examples of their type.
BBL: 20 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 WCF
Finish: blue/nickel
Grips:
Serial Number: 56565
Condition: Excellent. The carbine has 98% plus of the original bright blue finish on the barrel, magazine, barrel band and sights. The sides of the nickel plated frame show some minor scattered frosting. There is some minor finish wear on the right side of the frame and heel of the buttplate. The carbine retains 95% plus of the nickel-plated finish. The barrel and frame markings are crisp. The bore is bright. The stock and forearm are both in excellent plus condition with sharp checkering on the forearm and raised 'feathered' grain on the stock. There are no significant handling marks on either the stock or forearm and the wood retains virtually all of the original oil finish. This is a rare blue and nickel plated Colt Lightning Carbine in excellent condition with provenance from one of the great pre-WWII American firearms collections.
